Attorney reminds that laws protect innkeepers, NOT GUEST

Dear Abby: Please let your readers know that they are not nessarily protected if they leave their valuables in a hotel saftey deposit box. Most states have acts that protect innkeepers, not guest. The Illinois Inkeeper Law Proctection Act. which is typical of the acts in most states, limits th liability to $500.00 even if the hotel is at fault. For protection over $500.00, a guest must get the hotel to consent in writing to assume greater liability. FLORIDA WOMAN, DAUGHTER HURT IN KNIFING AT I-10 MOTEL..8-39-94

Mobile Police are trying to determine how a St.Petersburg, FL woman and her young daughter got stabbed and cut Tuesday morning at a moten in Tillman's Corner. Elizabeth, 36 and her daughter Genevieve, 3, were found injured in a room at the Motel 6 just off Interstate 10, said Mobile Police Department spokesman Tom Jennings. Elizabeth had a puncture wound to the neck, ahd her daughter had a four-inch cut on her neck. A knife was found in the room. Both we taken to the University of South Alabama Medical Center, where a spokeswoman said they were. in guarded conditiion.

THREE HELD IN MOSS POINT ARMED ROBBERY----no date to list

Three held in Moss Point armed robbery. An elderly couple staying at the Days Inn Motel had the door open as they began to pack the car to leave when the man walked away to get ice, the robbers entered the room hit his wife on the head with a gun, her husband heard her scream and ran to the room and was also hit in the head with a gun. The robbers escaped on foot after taking some possesions.

POLICE PROBE MOTEL DEATH: Biloxi Police are investigating suspects in the death of 55-yr old drifter Donald Ray Waldrop at a West Beach Boulevard motel. Waldrops nude body was found Sunday. He was originally from Spokane, Wash..Policewould not relase the name of the motel or the home address Waldrop listed on the the register, which investigator Earl Grimes did say was an address frequenty used by homeless people.An autopsy Monday showed Waldrop had been smothered todeath. He apppeared to have been robbed, Grimes said.

Just the few articals you have read should make you stop and think...........We are not safe out there when traveling on vacation or business or for any reason one may need to travel. All along the average person doesn't think this will ever happen to them or their loved ones, but these are examples that prove those thoughts wrong. There are many more motel and hotel crimes committed against the unsupeceting traveler. You are one of the luck ones only to have lost your valuables. Some people and many more lost alot more.......THEIR LIFE.....not to mention living through an ordeal that will haunt them forever.........and WHY? Because everyone who stays in a hotel or motel are subject to being robbed, beaten or even killed. Some people don't even know what happened to their valuables. They checked in, went swimming, sightseeing, or seminars and returned to their rooms to find their belongings gone........just gone........and the hotel and motel management has not a clue what happen! Nor are they going to compensate you for your lost. Only the amount you see stated in small print on the sign on the inside of the room door. That's it folks...........the amount varies from state to state but usually not over $500.00. But there are ways we can learn to protect ourselves and change laws making the Hotel and Motel Management responsibile for us and out belongings. EVERYONE TRAVELING AND STAYING IN THE HOTELS AND MOTELS OF AMERICA ARE NOT SAFE.......

THIS IS A FACT....................We know that traveling is a must in all our lives. For one reason or another we must subject ourselves to the evils out there. We expect the Hotel and Motel Mangement to be responsible for us, our belongings, and most of all.......OUR LOVED ONES..............but reality is folks they are not. So you may be asking yourself are there any ways we can protect ourselves and our loved ones........

YES.........there are several ways to accomplish this. The best way is to for once and all make the Hotel and Motel Ascoiatoin responsible for us. Unfortunally this will be a battle that will take the help of everyone banning together to change old and outdated laws. We are asking for your help in doing this. We are presently compling a list of people who have had this happen to them. After much researching we are finding that overall 1000 people, within a 24 hour period, in the USA are victims to hotel and motel crimes. That is a lot of people and the numbers are rising everyday. So we ask you please, if you or a loved one has been a victim of this type of crime to mail us and tell us your story. Only "WE THE PEOPLE" can change this and make it safe for us to be out there traveling. You must be willing to fight for your rights in the United States to change this and make it better. The Hotel and Motel industry has a lot of money and don't want the laws to change. It is a money game with them. Yes money is important today, but isn't your life more important? If you are willing to take a stand then we are here to help. Just send us your story.

Also I have put together a "Survival Manul" to help while we fight this in the courts. It is gives you information needed to help protect yourself while traveling. The manuel will also be updated to keep up with the changing times and you will have access to all updates. This "SURVIVAL MANUL" was written in coorepation with a man who retired from the hotel & motel burglary business. He practiced his trade for 40 years without being caught and was instrimuntel in compling information. Believe me, if you went out with him for one day to see how they work, you would never want to stay in a hotel or motel again. One important thing he taught us was that "What ever man made to keep someone out, man countered a way to get in". You will learn more on this as we go along.
